What does PCP mean?

You may often hear the term PCP used in health care. But do you know what it means?

PCP stands for Primary Care Provider. Primary care is general health care. Primary care is often your first step in addressing your health care needs.

Studies suggest that those who have a PCP receive a higher quality of care, have a better overall experience, and can develop lifelong partnerships with their PCP.

Your PCP takes ongoing responsibility for providing and managing comprehensive health care. Having a PCP, also gives you access to important resources for your health, such as:

• Provide preventive health care (annual well check exams)
• Management of chronic disease like diabetes, elevated blood pressure, asthma, COPD,  etc.
• Refer patients to specialist for further care
• Take care of outpatient services, like engaging patients with home health care services when patients need in-house care with physical therapy, home health aide, etc.
• Cancer screenings
• Providing immunization
